That small line — “This message was deleted” — is one of the most infuriating things you can see on WhatsApp. Someone sent something, thought better of it, and hit delete before you could read it. Or maybe you deleted a message yourself by accident and now need it back. Either way, the message isn’t necessarily gone forever. Depending on when the deletion happened and which platform you’re on, there are several legitimate ways to recover or view what was removed.
WhatsApp does not offer a native “view deleted messages” button. That’s intentional — the delete feature exists precisely for privacy. But the platform does create automatic backups, Android logs notifications before messages disappear, and cloud storage sometimes holds copies your phone no longer shows. Here’s how to work with all of that.

Method 1: Notification History on Android
This is the fastest check and costs nothing. Android saves a log of all notifications received, including WhatsApp message previews — and that log persists even after the sender deletes the message.
Open Settings on your Android phone and search for Notification History in the search bar. Tap it and enable it if it wasn’t on already. Scroll through the WhatsApp section and look for the message in question. If the message arrived before it was deleted and your phone received the notification, the first roughly 50–100 characters of the message text are visible here.
One limitation worth knowing: notification history only works if the feature was already enabled before the message arrived. It doesn’t retroactively show older notifications. If you haven’t turned it on yet, enable it now so future deleted messages don’t slip away completely.
On iPhones, there’s no equivalent notification history system built into iOS. The only option is checking the Notification Centre by swiping down from the top of the screen — if you haven’t dismissed the alert yet, the preview may still be visible there. Once dismissed, it’s gone from iOS completely.
Method 2: Restore from Google Drive or iCloud Backup
WhatsApp automatically backs up your chats to Google Drive on Android and iCloud on iPhone. If the message was deleted after your last backup was created, restoring from that backup will bring it back.
First, check your backup date. Go to WhatsApp → Settings → Chats → Chat Backup and note the timestamp of the last backup. If that date falls before the message was deleted, the backup contains the message. If the backup was created after the deletion, this method won’t help.
To restore:
- Uninstall WhatsApp from your phone completely
- Reinstall it from the Play Store or App Store
- Verify your phone number
- When prompted to restore chat history, select Restore
The key tradeoff here is significant — restoring a backup replaces all your current chat history with the backed-up version. Every message sent or received between the backup date and today disappears. Back up your current chats first if possible before restoring an older backup.
Method 3: Check Local Backup Files on Android
Beyond cloud backups, WhatsApp also creates local backup files on your phone’s internal storage. These are stored in the WhatsApp/Databases folder and are named with dates — for example, msgstore-2026-05-20.1.db.crypt14.
Using a file manager app, navigate to Internal Storage → WhatsApp → Databases. You’ll see backup files going back several days. If one was created before the message deletion, that file contains the deleted message in its database. Restoring it follows the same uninstall-reinstall process as the Google Drive method.
Method 4: Check WhatsApp Media Folders
If the deleted message was a photo, video, or voice note — not a text — there’s a good chance it still exists in your phone’s gallery. WhatsApp auto-downloads media files to your device’s storage when they arrive, separately from the chat database.
Open your Gallery or Google Photos app and look for a folder named WhatsApp Images, WhatsApp Video, or WhatsApp. Media files saved before the sender deleted them often remain in these folders untouched, even after the chat message is removed.
FAQs
Q: Can I read a “Delete for Everyone” message someone sent me?
A: The notification history method on Android may show a preview if your phone received the notification before deletion. Beyond that, there’s no guaranteed method.
Q: Does restoring a WhatsApp backup delete my current messages?
A: Yes. Restoring replaces your current chat history entirely with the backup version. Always back up current chats before restoring an older one.
Q: How far back do WhatsApp backups go?
A: Google Drive and iCloud retain the most recent backup by default. Local backups on Android typically store files from the past 7 days.
Q: Do these methods work on iPhone too?
A: iCloud restoration works on iPhone. The notification history and local database methods are Android-specific.
Q: Is WhatsApp notification history enabled by default on Android?
A: No. You need to enable it manually in Settings. Once on, it captures future notifications — it cannot retrieve past ones.
